What is the difference between precision molds and ordinary molds
Now let's first understand the six major characteristics of precision mold forming:
1. High dimensional accuracy of the product, with small tolerances, meaning high-precision dimensional boundaries;
2. High repeat accuracy requirements for the product, ensuring dimensional stability over days, months, and years;
3. High-quality mold materials, sufficient rigidity, high precision and smoothness of the cavity dimensions, and high accuracy between templates;
4. Use of precision injection molding machines instead of conventional ones;
5. Adoption of precision molding processes;
6. Selection of materials suitable for precision molding.
Many key dimensions of precision molds do not allow for draft angles, but during mold manufacturing, the tolerance zone is often utilized to add very small draft angles, such as for gear mounting posts. When creating digital models, attention must be paid to tolerance adjustments. Generally, the 3D models provided by customers are not usable because many of their dimensions are at the extreme limits. If mold design is based on these, the resulting mold will likely be scrapped.
Secondly, drawings must be comprehensive and accurate, with extensive use of inserts and consideration for machining. Relevant dimensions should be ensured by machines as much as possible (the role of the fitter's skill in precision plastic molds is to strictly follow the drawings). Most mold parts must have precisely designed tolerances, not only for the working parts of the cavity and core but also for all installation-related dimensions of inserts, which must be strictly controlled. Generally, tolerances are controlled within +/-0.005.
